What Is Muharram and Why Is It Significant for Umrah?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, and one of the four months that Allah has made sacred. The word Muharram is related to the Arabic word forbidden (Al Masjid Al Haram) which means that fighting is not allowed during this month, thus allowing Muslims to travel safely to perform their worship.

The month of Muharram and Ashura specifically is a month rich in spiritual significance and few times of the year can compare to it.
The first of Muharram is also the Islamic New Year, the day that Islam began to grow and the first Islamic state was established, when the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) migrated from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. It is a great intention and gratitude to start the new year in the same city where the Prophet (ﷺ) went away in front of the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram.
